The workers wear the gauze bandage over nose and mouth as protection against small particles of cotton. The "Front Parcel" which is a specialty of these workrooms contains the first dressings which the wounded soldier gets when he comes from the field of battle

Jeanne Septvents is a beautiful French girl, 10 years old, whose father, for nearly a year a prisoner in Germany, has given his life for France. Jeanne has been adopted by Company "E", 6th Battalion of the 20th Engineers. When the AMERICAN RED CROSS photographer found her in the garden of her little stone house at Caen, she was playing with knuckle-bones that she had painted red, white and blue in honor of her God-fathers. She wrote them soon after she was adopted saying: "I hope you are all in good health and not too unhappy at the front and I send big kisses to you all." The AMERICAN RED CROSS administers the funds for the maintanence of all the children adopted by the American troops. September 1918

All these boys are cutters in the Seacoast Canning Co., Factory #7. Ages range from 7 to 12. They live near the factory. Seven year old boy in front, Byron Hamilton, has a badly cut finger, but helps his brother regularly. Behind him is his brother, George, 11 years. He cut his finger half off while working. They and many other youngsters said they were always cutting their fingers. (See photo #2435 and label.) George earns $1.00 some days, $.75 usually. Some of the others said they earn $1.00 when they work all day. At times they start at 7 A.M. Work all day, and until midnight, but the work is very irregular. Names of those in the photo are George Mathews, Johnny Rust, John Surles, Fulsom McCutchin (11 yrs.), Albert Robinson, Morris McConnell. Location: Eastport, Maine
