Chicago Police Commissioner defends men. Washington, D.C., June 30. Not-with-standing a coroner's report that seven of the fatalities resulted from bullet wounds in the back, James P. Allman, Chicago police commissioner, told the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today that his police officers were justified in the tactics which resulted in the death of 10 marching steel strikers in front of the South Chicago plant of the Republic Steel Corp., last May 30. His men were attacked while attempting to preserve the peace, Allman insisted, and only by the tactics used was a massacre prevented if the marching strikers had succeeded in entering the plant where men were at work, 6/30/37

Grand jury "killed" union-sponsored program in Harlan County, Ky. Washington, D.C., April 27. Appearing before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today, former Rep. John Young Brown related how a union-sponsored radio program, designed to give publicity to the conditions in "Bloody Harlan" County, was destroyed because the Harlan grand jury threaten to summon all participants in the program. Brown added, "the man scheduled to make the next speech on the program, which was sponsored by the United Mine Workers, suddenly developed business in Chicago, another lost his way while coming to the studio, and another didn't get there on time," 4/27/1937

Poor memory. Washington, D.C., April 30. Testifying before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today, George S. Ward, Secretary of the Harlan County (Ky.) Coal Operators Association, said he had been "very careful" not to know what his "chief deputy" did with the association's expense money. The "chief deputy," Ben Unthank, has been missing since the Committee investigators, armed with subpoenas, began searching for him two months ago. Lewis former Deputy Sheriff in Harlan County, Ky., told the Senate Civil Liberties Committee as it resumed its investigation of alleged terrorism in connection with Harlan County Coal Operators' efforts to resist union organization drives. The money was returned to Sheriff Theodore R. Middleton each month in 1935 and 1936. Lewis added that many of the men listed as drawing salaries from the Sheriff's office were not regarded as regular employees, and several of them worked for coal companies, 4/22/1937

"Chowderhead" in spotlight. Washington, D.C. Sept. 23. A highlight at today's hearing of the Senate Civil Liberties Committee investigating espionage in labor relations was furnished by S. Cohen, alias "Chowderhead," who testified he had been in the strikebreaking business for 20 years. After admitting that he would work for any agency that would pay his price, Cohen further testified that he "bossed the job during the New York elevator strike and since then has been on the Remington-Rand strike in Connecticut. A bloody bullet-torn undershirt was displayed to the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today by Thomas Ferguson, coal miner union Representative, to suport his story of having been shot last January by Harland County deputy sheriffs. Richer by $102,728 since 1934 when he became Sheriff of Harlan County, Ky. Washington, D.C., April 26. It took a little quick thinking today on the part of Sheriff Theodore R. Middleton, of Harlan County, as he was questioned by the Senate Civil Liberties Committee in regard to the weath he acquired since becoming sheriff in 1934. He admitted his wealth had increased $102,728 since taking over the job of sheriff three years ago. His new holdings included stock in coal mines, an $18,000 farm, a $25,000 business building, and coal lands. during this time he reaceived less than $5,000 per year salary, 4/26/1937

Harlan witness tells of bribe to hide-out. Washington, D.C., April 28. Hugh Taylor, former Harlan County, Ky. Deputy Sheriff, told the La Follette Civil Liberties Committee today that High Sheriff T.R. Middleton offered him $2,000 to hide out during the present investigation. With both hands crippled by bullet wounds, Taylor declared he spent two weeks in emergency hospital here in March after being forced to flee Harlan hospital. He was shot, he said, by two other deputies, probably because he refused to join in the Musick murder, 4/28/1937

Charges Indian Bureau officials sympathetic to communist front organization. Washington, D.C., Nov. 22. Alice Lee Jamison, representative of the American Indian Federation, today charged before the House Committee Investigating Un-American Activities that nine high officials of the Indian Bureau in the Interior Department are members of or sympathetic to an alleged communist front organization, She referred to the Civil Liberties Union which previous witnesses before the committee charged was a communist front group. Two of the nine officials have since left the government service, Mrs. Jamison said, and another has been transferred to the Department of Agriculture
