Going to work at 5:30 A.M. April 24, 09. Small boy names [i.e., named] Jo. is a sweeper in Mill Mfg. Co. Lewiston, Me. Been there 2 years. I saw him working inside. Said he didn't know how old he was and he couldn't spell his name. Lives 2 miles out in the country and his father drives him out and back every day.  Location: Lewiston, Maine.

"The Mill School" at Avondale. The mill gate is but a few feet to the right of the photo and the employees pass through the school yard continually. From all I could gather on the question, the school is only a makeshift, because the mill children go here only the eight weeks of the year to comply with the law. Attendance is irregular. In the lowest first grade, with a child of six years, were two girls of fourteen and fifteen who had been to school but two weeks in their lives. (See photo and label 1742A. Also photo 1743A.)
