Six stages of fat salvage. Save a little fat from the roasting pan, as movie star Janet Blair is doing. When edible fats should give all possible nutrition before salvage, just a little can be taken from the pan before gravy is made. To meet war needs each housewife must save one tablespoonful of waste kitchen fat each day

Conversion. Rendering of household fats. Bagging finished meat scrap at a fat rendering plant. This material, made from cracklings produced in the rendering of waste household fats, is used as animal food. It contains fifty percent of proteins, free fatty acids, some grease and waste ash. It is important in that it aids directly in the raising of animals used for human food

Conversion. Rendering of household fats. Cans filled with reclaimed household grease are dumped into pressure cookers at a rendering plant. Often they are prepared the way the householder does. The cooker melts the greases, and the empty cans are removed for detinning. Other types of cookers remove grease from cans by steam plates and hot coils, eliminating the necessity for putting the cans into the cooker

Six stages of fat salvage. Saponification of fats makes glycerine. Glycerine makes explosives and camouflage paints. In this giant soap kettle, in a great industrial plant, fats become soap. When salt is added, the liquid part of this mixture will drop to the bottom of the kettle. That liquid will soon become glycerine

Why greases must be saved. Introducing two good soldiers of the home front: the housewife who saves her waste household fats and greases, and the butcher to whom she gives this salvaged fat after she has collected at least one pound, strained it through a metal sieve and poured it into a large, wide-mouthed can. Butchers displaying the poster shown here will pay househoulders for the fat, and sell it to rendering plants thereby turning this valuable material into industrial channels where it will be processed into ammunition for America's fighting men

Why greases must be saved. A soldier of the home front--and there's one in every American kitchen--saves all waste fats and greases so that they can be processed into ammunition for America's soldiers on the battlefronts. Pan and broiler drippings, deep fats, renderings from bacon rinds, these are some of the fats which should be put through a strainer to remove meat scraps and other solids, and poured into wide-mouthed cans such as coffee or fat cans
