Waste paper. Destined for destruction, this household rubbish heap contains waste paper so badly needed today for conversion into the paper packing in which defense and lend-lease goods are shipped. A little miss hitting the mark. Although her mind is far from vengeance to be wrecked on the Axis powers, this little lady is contributing to their defeat. She has gathered up an old bicycle tire and other odds and ends to contribute to the scrap rubber collection drive. Reclaimed rubber made from these materials is playing an imcreasingly important part in the war effort. Large percentages of "reclaim" are now being used in many material articles, such as combat tires, self-sealing gas tanks, etc.. Help build up Uncle Sam's scrap rubbe pile by contributing any no longer used rubber articles you may have

War workers' ideas. Jury votes on war workers' ideas that save man-hours and critical materials. More than 400,000 suggestions to speed war production have been submitted to suggestion committees in war plants, and the outstanding ones tested and sent through more than 2,000 War Production Drive labor-management committees to the above Board for Individual Awards at War Production Drive headquarters in Washington. All ideas recognized by awards are made available to all American war plants and interested United Nations through the system of plow-back into industry as a further benefit to war production. The Board for Individual Awards, composed of engineers and technical experts who contribute their time to evaluating production ideas, is shown at a Washington session. Left to right: Charles B. Government discovers method to preserve film. (2) Expansion and contraction, like paper and other sheet materials made from cellulose, films expand as they take up moisture and contract as they lose it, and the extent of the change is different in the two directions of them. This may cause some distortion of the image, and therefore is of particular importance where the image must be true to scale, such as in aerial photography. C.O. Pope is shown with a type of expansiveity tester used and which was designed by the Bureau of Standards. Long strips of film are suspended under constant tension in the [cabinet?] in which the humidity is varied by means of [...] solutions. The change in length is indicated [...continuously?] on a scale by means of an optical-level arrangement, 7/8/38

Shipbuilding. "Liberty" ships. This maze of rolling cranes, at a large Eastern shipyard is a typical scene in many large shipyards at work on ships for Uncle Sam's Navy and merchant fleet. Stocks of material are piled up for the cranes to take to vessels under construction so there is no delay in production while waiting for sections or materials. All parts are prefabricated in this huge Eastern plant which formerly turned out freight cars. The completed sections are then carried six miles to the ways on flat cars. Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyards Inc., Baltimore, Maryland
