While Patsy DiGiovanni puts kapok through the filler machine, which fluffs it out, Chet Wash is stuffing the back cushion of bomber pilot's seat in the upholstery shop of the Warren McArthur Corporation. Patsy came to work here in April 1941, from his native Torrington, where he had been driving a taxicab. He still lives in Torrington. Wash learned upholstery on a NYA (National Youth Administration) project in his native town of Plains, Pennsylvania. He's been in Bantam since June 1941, living in a furnished room

Bantam, Connecticut. Buffing aluminum supports for bomber seats is nineteen-year-old Gerard Gervais, who came to Bantam in the fall of 1941 with his older brother Ernest from Plainfield, Connecticut. The two brothers share a five-room house in Bantam with two aunts and an uncle, who also came to Bantam during 1941 to work at the Warren McArthur plant

Bantam, Connecticut. Norman Randall, right, bucks Alec Wasdo's rivets in a sub-assembly shop at the Warren McArthur aircraft seat plant. Randall is a native of Patchogue, Long Island, who came to Bantam from Lowell, Massachusetts, where he learned sheet metal work. He came to Bantam in the fall of 1941, and in December married a girl from Goshen, Connecticut, ten miles from Bantam. They are one of the four couples who honeymooned in the new defense homes project in Bantam. Alec Wasdo began work at Warren McArthur at the same time as Randall, but he drives to work from his former home in Waterbury. Wasdo was formerly a bartender, with no previous experience at factory work. He's already decided he prefers it to tending bar

The heating unit is in the kitchen of Fred Heath's four-room apartment in the new federally-financed homes for eighty families just a few minutes from the Warren McArthur factory in Bantam. The well-insulated coal fire puts steam in the radiators and provides the heat for cooking. The tenants are well-pleased although on several nights when the temperature dropped to ten degrees below zero they were forced to replenish the fuel every two or three hours. That cigarette Fred Heath holds is not tailor-made, by the way--he likes to roll his own

Bantam, Connecticut. One of the busiest sections of the Warren McArthur plant is the toolroom, with lathes turning for sixteen, and sometimes twenty-four hours daily. At the extreme left is Creighton Blanchard, who learned to operate a lathe at trade school in his hometown of Rutland, Vermont. Blanchard married a Rutland girl when he came to Bantam in July, 1941, and they have moved into a three-room unit of the new government housing project near the plant. Most popular reading matter in their comfortably furnished new home is the Rutland Herald, for Creighton insists that "You just can't get along without your hometown paper."

Bantam, Connecticut. War workers' homes. The war has brought approximately a thirty-three percent increase in housing facilities in Bantam--an eighty-unit federally financed housing project about five minutes from the Warren McArthur factory. The first forty units--two to a house, were occupied in early January 4, 1942 and the second forty had already been financed pending completion. As the automobiles and tires of workers in Bantam's defense industries wear out, it is probable that additional new housing facilities will be needed
