The coal is put in the rettort and heated to a temperature of 1832 degrees. From the smoke and gas, Tar, Ammonium Sulphite, sulphur, light oils and gas are derived and from the tar, medicines, aromatic oils, perfumes, dyes, and acids are derived. From the light oils, motor fuel is obtained. In short: this machine wastes nothing at all

Woodring awards distinguished Flying Cross to Commander of Mercy flight. Washington, D.C., Feb. 14. Secretary of War Harry Woodring, today presented Major Calen W. Haynes, Air Corps, with the distinguished Flying Cross for his work in commanding the recent flight of an Army bomber to Chile with a load of medicines and supplies for survivors of the Chilean earthquake. Charge D'Affaires Ad Interim of the Chilean Embassy, Senor Don Sergio Hunees, looks on. Major Haynes brought the bomber to Langley Field, Virginia, this morning, and flew to Washington for the medal presentation this afternoon, 2-14-39
