Government discovers method to preserve movie film indefinitely. Washington, D.C., July 8. People living in the year 2000 will be able to see and hear today's history in the making through experiments on preserving movie film now being conducted by the National Bureau of Standards. The experts at the bureau recently completed "accelerated aging tests in which films in six months went through the effects of 50 years' storage in a cool dark room. These tests showed that cellulose, or explosive film, would last from 50 to 100 years. The new Safety or Acetate film "may be preserved for longer periods." Unofficially, the experts put the figure at several hundred years. The following set of pictures were made at the Bureau of Standards and the National Archives Building. (1) Accelerated aging, The stability of the films is tested similarly to paper. They are heated in this oven at 100 [degrees] C and tested for loss of flexibility and for evidences of chemical decomposition. Arnold Soorne, of the Bureau Staff, is picture making the test

Burke Jacobs checks the milling of corn for which new industrial uses are sought at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Peoria, Illinois. A method for converting corn and other grains into butylene glycol by the action of bacteria, developed in the laboratory, has proven effective on a semi-commercial scale in the pilot plant. This chemical can be used in making anti-freeze for automobiles and in the production of commercial solvents for various manufacturing purposes. Department scientists have succeeded on a laboratory scale in turning butylene glycol into butadiene, from which synthetic rubber can be made. Now they are trying to do it on a semi-commercial scale

West Mine, West Frankfort, Illinois. Now abandoned. This mine has been down about a year. General caption: Many of the miners displaced by machinery in the larger mines are left stranded after mines are abandoned; have opened shallow primitive workings on the coal seam where it occurs close to the surface. The output of these shallow mines, known locally as gopher holes, is processed by a crude method and sold to truckers at about half the price of deep-vein coal. Many of the gopher holes have no storage in the tipple, and the miners underground are idle when no truck is waiting at the chute to load coal. Wages of gopher hole miners run from seventy-five cents to five dollars per day, and many miners earn less than WPA (Works Progress Administration) workers. Some of the larger gopher holes, such as Blue Ribbon Number 2 at Spillertown, Williamson County, are better equipped, pay better wages, and produce as high as 40,000 tons a year
