Family of migrant agricultural day laborers camped near Spiro, Oklahoma. The man and his wife had farmed in this vicinity for many years. However, they had always been renters. They have found it increasingly difficult to find land and house for rent. They had moved to the river bottom where they were camping out while working in the nearby fields. The mosquitoes were bad. They had to move to higher ground by the roadside. The entire family--mother, father and six children--had malaria. When the man was asked if there was much malaria among the people, he replied, "Yes, they have always started chillin' and they'll keep achillin' till frost, them that don't die." The father and two children were chopping cotton for a dollar a day. The father said "that as soon as they got a few dollars ahead it came a rain and they spent their money before it was dry enough to work again." They had a car and were going on to California as soon as they had enough money. The woman's sister is living in Bakersfield, California, and they want to get out there. "They ain't doing much, but he's making a living and I ain't making it here."

Fed alive to mosquitoes. Washington, D.C., April 24. One of the unsung heroes of the government service is Carroll Smith, research expert in equine fever in the Bureau of Entomology, Department of Agriculture, who since 1927 has allowed himself to be fed alive to a horde of mosquitoes. After a feeding on his arm, Mr. Smith lets the mosquitoes bite an infected guinea pig, after which they are permitted to bite an uninfected one. In this way he ascertains the extent to which mosquitoes transmit disease among horses and cattle. For his purpose the mosquitoes must be pure, says Mr. Smith in explanation of why he lets the insects feed on him instead of taking their bites out of any old animal, 4/24/1937

Public Health Service Investigation Commission to the China-Burma highway, Chefang (vicinity), China. Small irrigation ditch in the rice fields formerly had anopheles minimus mosquitoes breeding in pockets all along it. It has been rechanneled, as indicated by the new mud piled up on both sides. But the cattle have already trampled it; vegetation is growing in the cattle tracks and minimus are starting to breed in it again. The ditch had to be dusted with Paris green
