6 P.M. Making hair-brushes. Hausner family, 310 E. 71 St., N.Y. Frank is 6 yrs old. and John is 12. The mother had a sore throat and wore a great rag rapped around it, but she took it off for the photo. They said they all (including the 6 yr old) worked until 10 P.M. when busy. Their neighbor corroborated this. She said, "It's a whole lot better for the boys than doin' nothin'." The mother said the night work hurts their eyes and John said so too. Some of the younger workers (not all) who work in the Biloxi Canning Factory. On right-hand end of photo is Lazro Boney, 12 years old, been working 4 years at this factory. Both he and his mother said he makes $1.75 a day when shrimp are large and plentiful. He made $57.00 last year in 3 months. His brother Ed (not in photo) 14 years old, makes $2.25 on good days. Another brother, Pete, (one of the smallest in the photo) and 10 years old makes 50 cents a day. Two other brothers work at raw oysters; one, 17 years old, makes $4.00 a day. Eight ch[ildre]n in family. The mother said, "Lazro goes to school when he ain't workin; but he's gettin' so he'd rather stay home with the boys than go to school." Family lives at 616 Charter St. Next to Lazro (in photo) is Jim Kriss, 11 years old, been working at this factory two years; makes $1.50 on good days. His brother Jo Kriss (in photo next to girl on left end) 12 years old, makes $1.00 a day. Another brother Ed, not in photo, 14 years averages $2.50 a day. Sister Marie 7 years old (see photo at home) works when not tending the baby, and makes 25 cents a day. Mother picks also. Youngest boy in photo is Tommy Davis, 8 years old. 918 Charter St. Worked last year. Ester Barton, a 12 year old boy also is the photo, couldn't spell his own name. Been working two years. "Teeny" Adams, girl on left end of photo, 11 years old, makes $1.15 some days. Missed three weeks of school last month, working. Works now before school, or all day. Helen is an orphan, who one month after death of her widowed mother, was adopted by the Hope family of Seaford, Del. This is her 2d season at Johnson's Hulling Station. Memorial to Army and Navy Nurses unveiled in Arlington. Washington, D.C., Nov. 8. An 11 foot figure designed by Frances Rich, daughter of Irene Rich. Famous movie star was unveiled in Arlington Cemetery today by a nurse from the Army and one from the Navy, dedicated to the Army and Navy Nurses who gave their lives in line of duty, it represents a war nurse and stands about 150 feet from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, on the only plot in the cemetery reserved for women, left to right. Miss. Ida Hube, who sponsored the statue served from 1906 to 1910 as a Army Nurse; Irene Rich, mother of the designer; and Frances Rich, the designer is shown placing a wreath, 11/8/38

Appeared about eight or nine: could not speak English except to tell us that he was a sweeper in the spinning room (two other boys confirmed this); watched him go in at noon and come out at 6 P.M. on Aug. 21, 1911. At the houses his mother gave his name as Jose Mello, ten years old. There was no certificate for this boy at the superintendent's office. Birth records ambiguous. Note the duck-coop, made out of an old trunk, - in front yard. Mother said "The colt kicked the winders out." She is a no-'count mountaineer from Kentucky and her husband is a shiftless farmer who has let this farm run down to worthlessness. Construction workers' shack on government property off new highway to flying field which is also in the making. Living quarters of gravel pit workers and truck drivers. Ten to twelve men are housed and fed in this shack, which was built by the group who occupy same. Name of shack is Texas Long Horns. Entire gang is from Texas. Mr. M.A. Pevot of Mauriceville near Beaumont took most of the initiative as well as doing the cooking. He owns a small grocery store in his home town which is cared for in his absence by his wife, mother and father. Three of the trucks, which are very old, belong to him, and he rents them to his associates. Most of the trucks on this job were owned or rented by the worker. Shack is located in section known as Pleasant Grove, near Camp Beauregard. Alexandria, Louisiana
