Fontana Dam in the mountains of North Carolina, famous for their scenery, will be one of the biggest of the Authority's projects, being over 500 feet tall. (As it is under construction, no photographs are available but a general perspective view is attached in two copies, one of the prints being glossy but the other having better contrast for reproduction.) The downstream face of the powerhouse is developed in part as a gigantic show window. Considerable recreational and tourist development is expected for the vicinity, the Smoky Mountains National Park being next-door neighbor of the project. Visitors will be reveived at the upper level in a small structure marked by the flagpole towrd the right, from where a steep cogwheel car, used also by the operators and for the transportation of minor items, will give access to the powerhouse

Columbus, Georgia. Metal shelters and tents of Army men and construction workers in backyard of W.T. Mullis, who owns home and property and has grocery store on main highway about three miles from Fort Benning. For the shelters they pay ten dollars a month. For trailer or tent space two dollars a week. Mrs. R.M. Davis, whose husband is a First Sergeant at Fort Benning, now occupying metal shelter, used to live in hallway space in local home nearby and paid twenty dollars a month and had to furnish own bed. Her neighbor said "I hope these real estate men and people in Columbus who are charging so much and stealing from the poor people have to sit in their empty homes and shacks and starve when the defense program is over and finished."

Hired man and neighbor of Framk H. Shurtleff resting and chatting while gathering sap from sugar trees for making maple syrup. Sugaring is a social event and is enjoyed by all the young people and children in the neighborhood. The Shurtleff farm has about 400 acres and was originally purchased by grandfather in 1840. He raises sheep, cows, cuts lumber, and has been making maple syrup for about thirty-fiv years. Sugaring brings in about one thousand dollars annually. Because of the deep snow this year he only tapped 1000 of his 2000 trees. He expects to make about 300 to 500 gallons this year. Bridgewater, Vermont
