Whitemore, (left), chief of the Engineering Mechanics section, National Bureau of Standards, and Dr. A.H. Stand, make a final check of the huge 1600[?] pound porcelain insulator before subjecting it to 2,180,000 pounds pressure in the Bureau's hydraulic jack. The insulator, one of the few of its size in existence, will serve as a base for a 640 foot mast at Radio Station WGY, Schenectady, New York. One of the insulators successfully stood the pressure to 800,000 pounds while the second broke when the pressure was boosted to 2,180,000 pounds. The hydraulic jack is capable of exerting 10,000,000 pounds pressure
