Internal Revenue agents from 37 key cities in the United States and Alaska began a four-day conference today with treasury officials to devise means of expediting and improving field audits of income tax returns. An instrument which gives airplane pilots their height above the ground over which the plane is flying was demonstrated today to members of the Civil Aeronautics Authority by officials of the Western Electric Co. and the United Airlines. Claimed to be the first successful altimeter showing terrain clearance, the new device operates by radio, using the shortest wave ever employed for aviation, officials of the companies stated. At the U.S. Bureau of Standards officials were witnessing the testing of rigid steel frame knees that are used in grade eliminations such as over-passes, under-passes, bridges, etc. This photo shows the girder or knee placed into the huge 600,000 lb. testing machine in preparation for the test. This welded rigid steel frame knee which was designed to withstand 50,000 pounds had a maximum load of 153,600 lbs placed on it before it buckled.

The evidence. Washington, D.C. June 11. A returned mail package was placed in evidence at the Senate Post Office Committee hearing today when First Assistant Postmaster General W.W. Howes appeared to defend the charges against the Post Office Department of refusal to deliver mail thru strike picket lines. Howes testified that his department would ask use of not military force to protect "abnormal" deliveries of food and clothing to workers inside strike bound steel plants. He denied that postal officials had made an agreement with union officials concerning the acceptance of delivery of mail matter. In the photogrpah, left to right: Senator H.
