Baseball bats used by police in strike duty in Michigan town. Washington, D.C., Aug. 1. Testifying before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today, Mayor Daniel A. Knaggs of Monroe, Mich., admitted that some of the special police officers sworn in for strike duty at the Newton steel plant were armed with baseball bats because there were not enough bilies to go around. When he requested troops of Governor Frank Murphy to open up the picket line, Knaggs declared he was told to deputize his own men. This, he did, and over 30 persons were sworn in as special officers between June 9 and June 22, 1937, 8/1/38

Peace & Democracy group present protests to Italian Embassy. Washington, D.C., April 8. While members of the Washington branch of the American League for Peace and Democracy walked with signs in a picket line a block away, a group of demonstrators walked up to the front door of the Italian Embassy and rung the bell. The door opened briefly, a protest was handed to the unknown attache who glanced at the demonstrators, took the letter, then hastily closed the door. While the group waiting, the door stayed closed, and seeing no answer was forthcoming, they rejoined the pickets who kept at a distance of 500 from the Embassy by police. The group was protesting totalitarian invasions of minority nations in Europe

The evidence. Washington, D.C. June 11. A returned mail package was placed in evidence at the Senate Post Office Committee hearing today when First Assistant Postmaster General W.W. Howes appeared to defend the charges against the Post Office Department of refusal to deliver mail thru strike picket lines. Howes testified that his department would ask use of not military force to protect "abnormal" deliveries of food and clothing to workers inside strike bound steel plants. He denied that postal officials had made an agreement with union officials concerning the acceptance of delivery of mail matter. In the photogrpah, left to right: Senator H. Styles Bridges, New Hampshire; First Assistant PMG W.W. Howes, Senator Kenneth McKellar; Chairman of the Committee; and Senator Josiah W. Bailey, North Carolina. 6/11/37
