Unemployed miner, Herrin, Illinois. General caption: Williamson County, Illinois, once produced 11,000,000 tons of coal per year, and led the state in output. Since 1923, output has steadily declined until now it falls short of 2,000,000 tons. At one time, sixteen mine-whistles blowing to work could be heard from the center of Herrin. Now only two mines are running and those will probably be abandoned within the next year. The Herrin office of the UMWA (United Mine Workers of America) was once the most active in the state. Today it is no longer self-sustaining. These pictures were taken in the Herrin UMWA office on a day when the mines were not working. They show the type of miners still employed in Williamson County but faced with the almost certain prospect of being discarded by the industry when the last mine is closed

Big U.S. naval base in Ulster built by American and British workers. Londonderry is now America's premier naval base in Europe. Nearly 800 American technicians, with over 2,000 local workers, built it in six months, all the equipment down, to the last nut and bolt, coming from the U.S.A. American and British sailors warmly fraternized during the building of the base, which includes receiving and broadcasting stations, a 200-bed hospital, and large camps. Pictures taken when the first American warships escorting a convoy across the Atlantic arrived at Londonberry in January. The white ensign and the Old Glory fly side by side. The photograph was taken at the base, where British and American warships lie along side each other

Archbishop Francis J. Spellman of New York, on his recent tour of North African battlefronts, said mass for the men at the Fifty-seventh Fighter Group of the United States Army Ninth Air Force. This Air Force group is located "somewhere in Tunisia" and they are the boys who scored the biggest victory in the history of aviation, knocking almost 100 Axis transports and fighters out of the skies on one engagement. The archbishop held mass in a plane revetment at the Fifty-Seventh fighter base. The altar was set up and mass held on the spot. He said mass whenever and wherever there were boys who were interested in hearing one. Attendants at the mass were Major C.H. Logue, Catholic priest from Cleveland, Ohio, and Capptain J.E. McCarrity, Paulist priest from New York City and Air Force chaplain. They are seen in some of the pictures

Correct way to bake turkey demonstrated by Uncle Sam's expert cooks. Washington, D.C., Dec. 4. Note to housewives: your turkey- baking troubles will be over and the bird you serve for dinner this yuletide will be tender, juicy and flavorsome if you follow the method used by the expert cooks at the Bureau of Economics, U.S. Department of Agriculture. Continual testing and experimenting with various recipes has taught Uncle Sam's cooks that many a prize bird has become a "ham" when improperly prepared. The best recipe - so far discovered by the Bureau of Economics - is demonstrated in the following set of pictures, made under the supervision of Miss Lucy Alexander, Chief Cooking Specialist. Miss Alexander, a graduate of Vassar and the University of Illinois, has been on her present job for eleven years. Mrs. Jessie Lamb, Assistant Cook, is stuffing the turkey under the watchful eye of Miss Lucy Alexander. The turkeys on the table will go into the ovens at regular intervals, and be tasted and judged by a group of experts who are determining which diet and feeding program will produce the best flavored meat.

Movie star before senate committee. Washington, D.C., April 3. The S.R.O. sign was hung out today at the Senate Interstate Commerce Committee Hearing as Robert Montgomery, movie star, appeared to express his opposition to a bill designed to prohibit "Block booking" and "Blind selling" two trade practices which curb the discretion that a movie house owner has in selecting pictures to be shown in his community. Speaking as a former President of the Screen Actors Guild, Montgomery told the Committee that the Guild and their lawyers have come to the very definite conclusion that if the bill should become a law it would cut in half the production schedules of the Motion Picture Industry. 4-3- 39

Salvage. School children get in the scrap. The school children of America were officially organized for a nationwide salvage program starting on Monday, October 5, 1942. The children are going into the field as a junior army engaged in a major campaign for victory. Plans included the laying out of definite areas in each community to be assigned to specific groups of children. Plans were also made for holding meetings, collecting scrap, storing it and getting it to central points for shipment. Roanoke, Virginia has already gotten its program underway. This is one of the first official pictures of the school salvage campaign (taken in Roanoke where it is actually in operation) and it presents a fair sample of what is taking place all over the country. This picture shows children receiving instructions in school, after which they will be made lieutenants, sergeants, corporals, etc., and undertake the actual collection of scrap metal, rubber, fats and greases
