Large factory near Dubno by artillery fire. The area around Dubno, one of the strongest fortressess on the old Russian line of defense, was the Russo-Austrian front for nine months during 1915, and most of the buildings were destroyed and the fields covered with trenches and wire entanglements. The Interallied Medical Commission sent by the League of Red Cross Societies to study the typhus situation in Poland found typhus, relapsing fever and disentry prevalent in this area. The situation is complicated by the over crowding of the inhabitants due to the destruction of a majority of the dwellings. Drugs, clothing and hospital equipment are almost entirely lacking, and outside assistance is needed by the local authorities to deal effectively with the situation

Members of the A.R.C. Commission to Poland were photographed in front of their Warsaw headquarters before breaking up into units to attach the typhus epidemic. They went into the cities, towns and villages in the immense territory east of the River Bug where the people were hit hardest by the ravages of war. Many of them went to Brest Litowski where the Germans force the Russians to sign the document known to the world as the treaty of Brest-Litowski. Others scattered up closer to the fighting fronts in places like Pinsk, Kowel and Rawaruska

A party of Red Cross workers revisited the village of Zaprudy, Northern Poland. Outside the first hut they found an aged man constructing a coffin. Inside the cabin was the body of a peasant who had died of hunger. Beside the bed sat his wife weeping. In the doorway were their two children, sunken-cheeked, hollow-eyed, emaciated. The smaller boy's legs were as thin at the thighs as at the ankles. The only clothing was a cotton shirt
