A Maker of Rainbows. The famous rainbow woollens of Poland are known all over Europe for their beauty of coloring and quality of texture. On Sundays the rural roads of Poland are bright with the gay costumes of the peasants, and they are seen even in the cities, on market days. It is on such simple machines as this that the rainbow wool is spun by the barefooted peasant women, whose industry and thrift are proverbial, and who, despite hardship and misery, never give up nor cease to believe in the rainbow of the future. It is because the war has worked some of its worst havoc in the large agricultural areas of Poland that the country is now undergoing such a strain of want and distress. The coming of the American Red Cross into these ruined country districts has been the only source of relief the people have known

Refugees by the wayside. All roads leading to Poland have peasant refugees like this woman and her two babies making a brave effort to reach their former homes from which they were driven by the cruel hand of war. They are very hungry and easily fall victim to the ravages of typhus fever. They are people that the Americans through their Red Cross are trying to snatch from the hand of death and give another lease of life. It is a stupendous task in a land where 65,000 people are expected to die of typhus before the coming winter is out

Poland's tribute to America. Warsaw's Russian church, in their desire to eliminate everything Russian, Poles, since the war, at first planned to tear down the magnificient cathedral of Alexander Nevski, a great edifice erected during the Russian domination in the hope that the religion of the Poles could be changed. After tearing the dome from the bell tower, however, the policy of the government was changed and the beautiful piece of architecture will now remain and probably will become a national museum. In this cathedral on July 4 was held the service at which blessings were invoked upon the Americans who have helped Poland by relief work during the past two years during which the country has been struggling to establish itself as a nation

Types of Polish Refugees in the refugee camp at Kowel. During their retreat of 1915 the Russians forcibly evacuated a considerable proportion of the Polish population and destroyed the habitations so as to leave a barren desert to the enemy. Now these refugees are straggling back through the Polish lines into Poland, and it was estimated that between a million and a quarter and a million and a half would return from Russia and Siberia between June and the coming of winter

At the old spinning wheel. Polish peasant woman weaving flax at the old spinning wheel in her humble home east of Warsaw, the capital of Poland. Every home has a spinning wheel and the flax which crows right up to every door is woven into cloth with which are made many of the picturesque native costumes. But every farm raises more than enough flax for domestic uses and sends it stocks to the great mills at Lodx or outside the country, depending of course on the requirements
