To the right is a spot of sinister significance in Poltava-the wood of Belawitch-in which in lone, shallow trenches the Council, or political Court of the Bolshevists, interred its victims after they had been tortured and executed. To the left is a one-story brick structure formerly occupied by the "Militisia" as the police of the Red Government are named. The groups of country people have tramped in from their villages in the hope of indentifying the remains, which are taken from the pit. The Bolshevists observed secrecy in their burials and it will be only a small fraction of the number of their victims can ever be discovered

Bridge over the Vorskla River at Poltava, Russia. In the middle of the photo are the foundations of the bridge which was in 1917 destroyed by the Germans, again in 1918 destroyed by the Bolsheviks and now is left in ruins. The temporary bridge constructed by the Volunteer Army is now in use. To the right of the photo one can see boys bathing. If the Russian is dirty it is not because he prefers to be. He enjoys being clean. Steam bath house of even the most remote village is patronized by all the villagers once a week, Sunday being the great bath day. The soap which the American Red Cross has taken to Russia as an emergency measure to help relieve the shortage has been appreciated. Once a month on the arrival of the A.R.C. relief train, the medical supplies for the hospital of Poltava cross the temporary bridge
