Guntersville Dam and powerhouse. Closeup view of powerhouse. Note texture of concrete on electrical bay which is typical of most TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) projects. Pattern is produced by alternating directions of grain in adjoining form panels. Rough-sawn lumber is used to make grain more pronounced. Heavy texture conceals color and surface irregularities of concrete and will become particularly valuable as concrete ages. Office floor is above flood level and has continuous glass brick strip

Pickwick Dam. Reception room of a powerhouse which is somewhat difficult to reach (therefore, supplementary visitors' facilities were developed at the opposite end of the dam in separate buildings). Rest rooms, elevators, stairway, overlook balcony, and control room can be viewed either through glass doors from this room or from large plate glass openings of the overlook balcony. Terrazzo floor and base, burlap covered plaster walls, acoustic plaster ceiling. Graphic display is in a shallow wall niche between control room doors; top line shows three functions of projects in cross-sectional perspectives; photographs elaborate on TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) program; map of valley is applied to specially constructed movable table

Uncle Sam spending $3,000,000 to make one map. Washington D.C. July 28. A huge photographic map which when completed will have cost $3,000,000, is being put together by the Agriculture Adjustment Administration, Department of Agriculture, in Washington. Approximately one-thrid of the entire land surface of the United States is being photographed from the air from a distance of three to five miles up. The idea behind this gigantic job is to determine compliance in the Agricultural Conservation Program, plan soil conservation or Public Works projects, lay out roads, forests and public parks, drainage ditches, dams and lakes and also to seek to improve National Defense. (1) C.E. Kowalczyk, AAA worker, is shown making a stereoscopic examination of the finished photographic prints to determine the relief or elevation of land surface. 7/28/37

Men on car by tents. Construction workers in front of tents. Names: William Allen Jones, Fort Benning, Paul Knight, Fort Benning, J.F. Goza, C.D. Brownlee and B.I. Juhan. For space only in W.T. Mullis' backyard they pay two dollars a week. Two of them are now working at Fort Benning and others the Williams Construction Company, building foundations for new barracks, got laid off couple of weeks ago for indefinite time. They all came from Stone Mountain, Atlanta, Georgia, where they worked on WPA (Work Projects Administration). Some have been here one month. One said "There's something crooked in this here job--some men have worked every day seven days a week and others get no work at all. It's a dirty shame and the government ought to know about these conditions and see what goes on. It's awful bad."

Migrant camp, Weslaco, Texas. Local employment men say that there was no need for migrant labor to handle the citrus and vegetable crops in the valley, the local supply of labor being ample for this purpose. Most of the local labor is Mexican and the labor contractors favor Mexican labor over white labor, partly because the Mexican will work much cheaper than whites. One white woman who was a permanent resident (her husband was on WPA (Works Progress Administration/Work Projects Administration) said that the white people who lived in the valley, had no trouble with the Mexicans. The Mexicans were good neighbors, she said, always willing to share what they had. She said the white migrants who came into the valley and resented and misunderstood the Mexicans caused the trouble between the two races. Some towns in this section permit camping only in trailers. The charge for camping in tents is about fifty cents per week, including water, which in some cases must be carried four city blocks. Privies are tin, very bad condition. Garbage is collected only once a week, with large dumps of decaying fruits and vegetables scattered among the camps. Some of the white migrants in this camp were very suspicious of governmental activity, due to the use by south Texas newspapers of the term "concentration camps" referring to FSA (Farm Security Administration) camps
