Every available space for parking is used by skiers on weekends at Clinton Gilbert's farm. The house is about eight years old; purchased by Gilbert in 1929. He has about 150 acres, mainly a dairy farm with twenty three cows. He also makes about one hundred gallons of maple syrup every year. First skiing town in U.S. built on this farm in 1934 by White Cupboard Inn, but Gilbert now owns and runs tow and it has increased his income about 25 percent. Conservation. Used typewriter campaign. The War Production Board (WPB) has launched a campaign to secure 600,000 used typewriters from business firms and private individuals. These machines are needed by the Army, Navy, Maritime Commission, Board of Economic Warfare, Lend-Lease and other government departments and agencies. Don MacDonald, Washington, D.C. typewriter dealer, affixes a decalcomania on a machine turned in to the government by John Stockham, Washington, D.C. insurance man. This was one of the first typewriters thus enlisted in the war effort. The decalcomania reads: "Property of U.S. Government - severe penalties for unlawful use"

"Hell's Half Acre," a row of disreputable houses at the edge of the mill settlement at Avondale. These houses harbor the scum of the negroes and whites of the vicinity, and are separated from the mill village by a shallow ditch, which gave Gov. Comer, owner of the mills, the excuse that they were not on the mill property when the question of their removal was taken to him a while ago. A prominent social worker told me that not only do the mill people patronize these resorts, but that the broken down mill girls end up in these houses and that there are, on court record, three cases within a year of girls under fourteen years of age ruined in Hell's Half Acre. Told me, that there are innumerable instances showing the bad moral influence of the cotton mill settlement. (See report on Avondale conditions). Location: Birmingham, Alabama.

Lady claims one seventh of property of U.S. Post office--posts her part. Washington, D.C., July 22. Mrs. Samuel A. Wimsatt who says that one seventh of the property upon which a postoffice was built at Rockville, MD., near here, is still hers because it was not legally bought from her. This morning she appeared at the scene upon which a dedication was scheduled and began posting 'No Trespassing' signs upon the part of the land which she claims. She threatened to have any trespassers locked up. Part of the ceremonies was to be a tour of inspection of the building, and when the time came, no arrests were made, although Mrs. Wimsatt began writing names upon the back of a 'No Trespassing' sign and threatens action Monday morning against visitors to the building. On the sidewalk behind her is her sister, Mrs. Claude Tschiffely who aided her in posting the signs, 72239

Mullis, who owns home and property and has grocery store on main highway about three miles from Fort Benning. For the shelters they pay ten dollars a month. For trailer or tent space two dollars a week. Mrs. R.M. Davis, whose husband is a First Sergeant at Fort Benning, now occupying metal shelter, used to live in hallway space in local home nearby and paid twenty dollars a month and had to furnish own bed. Her neighbor said "I hope these real estate men and people in Columbus who are charging so much and stealing from the poor people have to sit in their empty homes and shacks and starve when the defense program is over and finished."

Camp Livingston construction worker's shack and tents near Fort Beauregard. These are along the main highway on government property so they do not have to pay rent. Most of the people cook outdoors and haul water from a nearby church faucet. There are no sanitary facilities and most of them have brought here their own lumber for building their shacks, or made them out of old trucks. Alexandria, Louisiana
