Smelt Continue to have their day at the Capitol. Washington, D.C., April 1. Little Beulah, Michigan, has succeeded admirably lately in getting itself on the map by reason of its location in the heart of Michigan's smelt industry. Today, the Mayor of Beulah, Arthur Finch, called upon Vice President John Garner and presented him with a box of the pint-size fish in recognition of the Vice President's efforts to have smelt transplanted to Texas waters. The V.P. remarked that they are just the right size for bass bait, and the Mayor still maintains that they are best for human consumption. 4-7-39

First lady to be decorated by Cuban government. Washington, D.C., Nov. 2. The decoration of the Grand Cross of the Cuban Red Cross which will be presented to Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House Thursday, was brought to the Capital today be Lieut. Col. Evelio Figarola [?], infante [?] (right), General Secretary of the Cuban Red Cross Society and Major Luis Fernandez Ardois, personal aide to Col. Figarola. The decoration is offered to Mrs. Roosevelt in recognition of her humanitarian work and as a token of appreciation from the Cuban Red Cross Society. Rewarded for courage. Washington, D.C., May 12. Lieut. C.B. Olson (right) United States Coast Guard, receiving from Secretary of the Treasury Morgenthau today the distinguished Flying Cross, The first to be awarded to a Coast Guard Aviator. Lieut. Olson was awarded the cross in recognition of a flight in storm and darkness he made 300 miles to sea from the Miami, Fla. air station to n army transport and returning safely with an army officer in desperate need of an operation. The flight was made in June 1935. On the left is Rear Admiral R.R. Waesche, Commandant of the Coast Gaurd, 5/12/38

Mr. Anthony B. Thomas, one of the leading druggists of San Leandro and also a three-term city coucilman, is of Portuguese descent. His father, a whaler who was born on the Flores Island of the Azores, and his mother came to the United States and settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts eighty-five years ago. In 1882 the entire family came overland to the East Bay area and established their home in San Leandro which was fast becoming a thriving Portuguese community. Mr. Thomas' father wanted him to be a whaler, but after finishing high school, he decided that he would prefer to be a druggist and studied to that purpose. The people of San Leandro, in recognition of his ability as a leader, have elected him three times a member of the five-man council board. Mr. Thomas says, "We are all Americans now and I am proud to be part of a democratic government and always want to do my share on any democratic government and planning board."
