Biography of a Liberty Ship. Birth of a ship. Less than five months from keel laying to launching ceremony was the record set by the Patrick Henry. This time is being reduced to 60 days in the construction of her sister ships of the "Liberty Ship" design. This standard design was selected by the Martime Commission to meet the need for ships that can be built in existing yards in minimum time with the additional purpose of conserving materials vitally needed for the war production effort. Prefabrication of sections in special plants, replacing of riveting wherever possible by welding and other new departures all contribute to the speed of construction and saving of material and dead weight in these ships which are already proving their worth in the war on the Axis

Final check, weather device. Washington, D.C., Sept. 13. L.L. Stockman, also of the Bureau of Standards, Radium Division, uses a wave meter to check the radiometeorograph before attaching it to the parachute and the balloon. When the inflated bag breaks, which it usually does after several hours flying, the instrument is parachuted to the ground. Many times the instrument is found and returned to the bureau. The radiometeorograph contains two radio tubes, a miniature dry cell battery and devices which record and send the weather signals which, in turn, are recorded on a chronograph in Dr. Astin's bood [?] radio room.

Capitol's busiest policeman. Washington, D.C., April 27. Besides being an arm of the law a Capitol policeman has to also act as an infromation bureau. Frank Foley, officer on duty at the entrance of the Senate office building from 8-4, kept a record today of the number of questions asked him. At the end of his day's hitch the total showed 1,568 questions asked, and answered correctly and with a smile, if we must believe Mr. Foley. Miss Mildred Aikten, of Brooklyn, N.Y., is the pretty sightseer in this picture, receiving directions from officer Foley, 4/27/1937
