Serbian farm homes. This picture shows some of the quaint and simple farm homes of Serbia and old Macedonia. Serb farmers usually live in small villages and go many miles to the fields where their crops are grown. In reality they operate two farms, for they always have a truck garden around their dwelling, as well as the far-away plot of land devoted to corn and wheat. The American Red Cross has been the means of American farming machinery of all sorts being introduced into Serbia. Before the war the most difficult labor was accomplished by hand but modern methods seem to be taking hold there now and it is believed that Serbian farmers, once they have been convinced of the "better way", will lose no time in adopting American ideas. This photo shows a Serbian village near Nish. The ground is planted for the summer crops and many of the late blooming trees are in flower

The American Red Cross hospital at Mossley Hill, Liverpool, has grown rapidly since it was started a year ago, until it now includes about twenty buildings. The central building is that which housed the original hospital. It was formerly the residence of Dr. Edmund Muspratt, a wealthy Liverpool business man. The beautiful ivy covered building, in the so-called "cathedral" architecture, with its beautiful rose-window, is one of the finest residences in Liverpool and it lent itself admirably to conversion into a hospital building

A Bulgarian railroad locomotive at Dedeagatch, a town on the sea coast which was severely boombarded by Allied cruisers from the Aegean Sea. The marksmanship is remarkable, two direct hits being registered on the engine which was but a small object at a distance of five miles. A Marvelous Transformation. A series of three pictures illustrating the "before and after" periods of American Red Cross clothing distribution in Montenegro. The Raggedest Man in Montenegro. With clothes that were patched, darned and held together by bits of twine, shedding ravelings at almost every step, this man wandered into the market place at Podgoritza with a goat which he spent four years in a mountain cave during the Austrian occupation of the country with the goat as his only companion. With the money secured from its sale he set out to buy some clothes but could find no garment that could be bought at that price. He was picked up by Lieut. Col. H.L. Fairclough of Leland Stanford University, director of the American Red Cross work in Montenegro, as the raggedest of all ragged men in the country, and taken to the Red Cross relief station

Hungry but hopeful. These little Serbian orphans go to the American Red Cross for their meals. As soon as classes are over at noon there is a wild scramble for the Red Cross station and a cup of steaming hot chocolate and a big slice of bread. In all Serbia there is not food fit for these children. Most of them have no homes and their only eeans of support is the generosity of their friends across the sea. These children were photographed while waiting for their cups to be filled

Worshipping place of Imperial Russia. Before Russia's collapse, during the early part of the war, the former Czar Nicholas frequently attended this church while sojourning with his troops at Wilno, the old capitol of Lithuania, now in the hands of the Poles. Always in those days his imperial name was mentioned in the prayers. It was announced in this same church one Sunday morning early in the beginning of the present terrible winter that the American Red Cross had come to Wilno to help in the relief of the misery and suffering that war had brought to tens of thousands of people. A long moment of deep silence held the shivering people, broken finally by sobbing and cries. Then led by the priest they burst into a song of thanksgiving. It ws their national hymn, "God Watches over Poland"

Lost Soles. Illustrating the conditions as regards footwear that exist in Southern Europe today. The picture shows the feet of a mother and son who came to the American Red Cross station in Podgoritza, Montenegro, asking for aid. During the war, many soldiers went shoeless, even in winter, several thousand losing their legs as a result of frozen feet. Red Cross doctors say that 25 percent of the winter illness in these countries today is caused by lack of proper clothing and foot protection. The American relief organization has already distributed several tons of used American clothing and shoes in Montenegro
