Appearing before the Senate Unemployment and Relief Committee today, William Hodson, New York City Commissioner of Welfare, suggested modification of the Unemployment Insurance Act so that the basic payment to an unemployed person will provide an allowance for his dependents. Edgerton, (right) recently nominated by President Roosevelt for the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, as he appeared at the Capitol for questioning by the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee in regard to whether he opposed the rights of courts to declare acts of Congress invalid. He stated that as a judge, he would not hesitate to declare a law unconstitutional if he believed it to be. Secretary of the Interior Ickes denied before the Senate Public Lands Committee that this department investigators had tapped telephone wires of any Senator or Representative. Middleton, of Harlan County, as he was questioned by the Senate Civil Liberties Committee in regard to the weath he acquired since becoming sheriff in 1934. He admitted his wealth had increased $102,728 since taking over the job of sheriff three years ago. His new holdings included stock in coal mines, an $18,000 farm, a $25,000 business building, and coal lands. during this time he reaceived less than $5,000 per year salary, 4/26/1937

Jesse Jones, Chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, appeared before the Senate committee investigating railroad financing today and told of the five loans the RFC made to the Missouri Pacific Railroad during 1932/33.
