Migrant family from Oklahoma in Texas. A family of six alongside the road. An example of how they fall between the relief agencies. The father, aged thirty-five, is an intelligent fellow, a painter by trade. Advanced tuberculosis, victim of an occupational disease. Ineligible for WPA (Works Progress Administration), rated as totally disabled. As a state charge under Oklahoma relief standards, the family were told the maximum relief would be seven dollars every two weeks. They lost their home, their furniture, took to the road a year ago and when the photographs were made they were found to be without money, shelter, and without food for the four children

One son has been tractored out and has been on WPA (Work Projects Administration) for two years. Another son was tractored out in 1937. Has moved to town and remains temporarily off relief by selling his livestock. "What are my boys going to do? It's not a question of what they're going to do. It's a question of what they're going to have to do. They're not any up there in Congress but what are big landowners and they're going to see that the program is in their interest. As long as the government is paying the landowner more to let the land out than they make by renting it, they won't rent it."

"Would go back to Oklahoma but can't get along there. Can't feed the kids on what they give you (relief budget) and ain't made a crop there you might say for five years. Only other work there is fifty cents a day wages and the farmers can't pay it anyways." One of these families has lost two babies since they left their home in Oklahoma. Secretary Wallace boosts president's suggestion for rural security loans. Washington, D.C., July 12. Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace told the Senate Banking and Currency Committee today that the president's suggestion for loans totaling $600,000,000 for rural security projects is prudent and economic policy. He said there are 42,000 new tenant farmers each year, and 'if we continue to refuse aid to these needy families, many of them will inevitably drift in to the cities in an effort to get some kind of help there. The cost of supporting them on relief obviously will be far greater than the sum necessary to help them get a new start on the land'
