"Dinner-Toters" waiting for the gate to open. This is carried on more in Columbus than in any other city I know, and by smaller children. (See photos.) Many of them are paid by the week for doing it, and carry, sometimes, ten or more a day. They go around in the mill, often help tend to machines, which often run at noon, and so learn the work. He recently returned from a hobo trip through 25 states. View of the Gorenflo Canning Co., Biloxi, Miss., taken at 7 A.M. Many tiny workers here, some of whom began to arrive at the factory as early as 5 o'clock, an hour before they were allowed to begin work, and long before daylight on a damp-foggy day. The whistle had blown and they came and stood around merely to hold their places. When the "catch" has been good, they begin work early, but today it was not good so they were waiting for daylight. In this group I ascertained the ages of a few, as follows, 1 child of 6 years, 1 of 7, 2 of 8, 1 of 10 and there were many more. See report also. Location: Biloxi, Mississippi.

NLRB Regional Director at Cincinnati questioned by House Committee. Washington, D.C., Dec. 18. Philip G. Phillips, Regional Director of the National Labor Relations Board at Cincinnati, was questioned by the House Committee investigating the NLRB regarding a report he made last January to Nathan Witt, Board Secretary, in which he said that the City Editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer 'and my guild friends will doubtless be able to take care of' a series of articles about a board hearing in the case of the American Rolling Mills Co. Asked whether he did not think this was suppressing news about the board, Phillips replied, that was not because he did not take credit for killing the story but for telling the City Editor that it was 'made out of whole cloth, vicious, and full of lies.' He said his interest in the case was to see that 'the truth should be printed about the board'

"Renters." Itinerant Texas farmers who rent a farm for a year or so and then move on, giving them nomadic habits and everything is temporary. House unpainted and ill-cared for. The children from five years old up pick cotton and help with the farm work, but get little or no schooling. It is estimated by State University that 300,000 children are thus affected in Texas alone. See Hine report Texas. Beginning with the five year old girl here who picks some, all work including the women. The nine year old girl picks one hundred and fifty pounds a day. Father is in town. Farm comprises fifty acres, and they get about twenty bales of cotton this year, which is not a good year. Been here one year. Farm of J.W. Vaughn. Route 6. Location: Corsicana, Texas.
