Living the life of a soldier. Like real little soldiers these two Roumanian orphan boys accepted their first weeks of trench life. In the dank darkness of their old dugout homes along the battlefront they have inherited the hardships their father endured. They themselves are being slain and deformed by their greatest enemy: darkness. Over their heads the weeds grow in sunlight. But in the blackness of their trench home their fragile bodies wither and crumple like thirsty flowers. The smoke that had no outled from their cavern fireside temporarily blinded them and finally affected their eyesight. When rescued by Junior Red Cross relief workers, a heavy film coated their eyes. Trachoma and other eye diseases so prevalent in eastern Europe today are easily traced to crowding children into living quarters as these

Gourgeous holiday costumes of Roumanian Peasantry. Beautiful hand embroidered over dresses, and filmy hand made lace scarfs, were common enough in Roumania among the peasant women, before the German Bulgar Turk occupation during the war. Now these gorgeous costumes are only seen in remote villages where the Hun or Turk looters either stopped for a short time only, or did not visit at all. Garments of this character are heirlooms handed down from mother to daughter. And it is difficult to calculate their value. Today there is a serious shortage of woolen and cotton garments in Roumania, and even their ordinary peasant costumes, in which plain white wool or cotton are largely used are really luxuries. It was to relieve this situation that the American Red Cross brought tons of substantial wearing apparel bath robes and hospital garments mainly from the big stores that had been originally sent to the warehouses of France for use of the American Army and distributed this stuff to the sufferers in Roumania. Women of the country were employed to make the garments into warm dresses for needy Roumanian boys and girls and for the babies

Even the nursemaids of Romania are attractive. Here is a group in Sinaia Nothing to do all day but watch a cow. That is the job of this Roumanian peasant boy. It is during the long hours that he plays his flute and learns the songs of the birds ; Beautiful parks surround the hotels of Sinaia where fountains play and the setting sun makes rainbow colors in the spray.

With the American Red Cross in Roumania. Canteens like the one shown in this photo, were established in a dozen or more of the most destitute villages of Roumania last winter by the American Red Cross, when the morale of the country was at its lowest point on account of the wide spread misery that had been caused by the German occupation, when under orders of Field Marshall Vin Mackensen, the German troops requisitioned all the grain that could be found in the country and also took away tons of household supplies. When the Germans left and when the Bulgars and Turks-who were even more avaricious than the Germans in the matter of looting, took their departure, Roumania was left helpless. Without the American aid that was freely given, the Country could not have found strength or inclination to start on the work of reconstruction

A Queen in the Garden of Eden. A young Eve and a young Adam appear before Queen Marie of Roumania in a costume that was popular in the Garden of Eden and received a modern outfit of clothes. The picture was taken at a distribution of American Red Cross relief supplies during which the Queen acted as an American Canteen worker. Most of the recipients of American generosity were mothers and children. Rather than have their children appear before the Queen in their rags, many mothers dressed them in just a smile. The boy at the right has just received his clothing and is waiting for his little sister to chat with the Queen
