Production of butylene glycol. A department scientist checks the results of experimental fermentations of corn to produce butylene glycol at the Northern Regional Research Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture at Peoria, Illinois. This research led to the development of a semi-commercial scale of a fermentation process for converting corn into butylene glycol, a chemical that can be used in making anti-freeze for automobiles and in the production of commercial solvents for various purposes. Studies are now underway to devise a practical method for turning butylene glycol into butadiene, from which synthetic rubber can be made. The work has already been done on a laboratory scale

Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. The first step in the manufacture of high-altitude-flying shatterproof oxygen cylinders in the metal department of a large rubber factory is the forming or stamping of the shell. Stainless steel sheets are blanked or cut into discs(left foreground). Before stamping, these discs are drawn through rolls where a drawing compound is added to both sides to facilitate the forming of the shell. The 750-ton toggle press, shown above, forms a half cylinder in one powerful stroke. Once the half cylinder is formed, it is trimmed and the value-fitting hole is punched into the spherical dome. A cleaning operation later removes the drawing compound. The cylinder halves are now ready for the various welding operations. Firestone, Akron, Ohio

Rubber reclamation. Recovering rubber from old tires. In the central wash tanks of a large Midwest plant employing the xylos process, agitated water removes dirt, treated fiber and excess fiber solvent. This operation follows removal of bead portions from scrap casings, breaking of casings into small pieces and dissolving of fiber in caustic soda. The resultant phases of rubber are then pumped to dewatering sources. Firestone
