Part of the huge bakery at Monastir turned over to the A.R.C. by the French Army. If formerly supplied the Allied Army of the Orient with 125,000 loaves of bread a day. Now it is sued to help feed the starving civilian population in this district of the Balkans. The baskets heaped in the background are used to hold the kneaded dough, which is placed in the pits drawing heat from the fire-boxes, to rise. The fires are raked out and the dough is put into the fire-boxes on long planks being baked by the heat retained in the sontes. Each loaf baked here weighs three pounds and is in the shape of a fair-sized dish-pan. A mill where wheat is ground into flour adjoins the bakery and is operated by the A.R.C

A Royal Welcome for Americans in Need of Good Roads Movement. Unrepaired for five years and chopped to pieces by heavy military traffic, the highways of the Balkans present a difficult problem for modern means of transportation, the motor truck. This shows an American five ton vehicle laden with clothing and medical supplies for remote mountain villages of Serbia stuck in the mud. It required all the oxen and horses in the village to move it. It was the first motor truck many of the villages had seen and its inability to negotiate this road, which oxen drag heavy carts over daily, did not impress the natives with its capabilities. The farmers returned to their field rather unsatisfied with their ancient methods of transportation

Of all the diseases that broke out in central Europe during the last months of the war and following the armistice typhus assumed the greatest proportion, becoming epidemic in all the countries. For a time there was a grave danger that it would spread to the Western part of the continent. Early in January the American Red Cross sent medical units throughout that part of the world. They carried with them medicines, hospital tents and equipment. A systematic campaign was commenced to arradicate the scourge. In the picture one of the Red Cross ambulances is seen in Serbia bringing Typhus victims to the field hospital

American doctors at work in Serbia. In one of the oldest and quaintest towns in southern Europe, Prizren, Serbia, this American Red Cross doctor is attending to all the surgical work of the population of 100,000 souls. Dr. Lester B. Bradford, of Boothby, Maine, is seen in the relief hospital dressing the wounded feet of a citizen fired upon by bandits. Prizren is in the mountains fifty miles from any railroad. Bandit raids are the rule rather than the exception. As they usually take place at night, only the bravest and most unwary travel after dark. Great suffering has followed in the wake of war in this section of Serbia and the miserable people have almost reached the end of their hope of re-adjusted conditions that will alleviate their hunger and poverty

A typical street group in Kavadar, Southern Serbia. The mountain pony is an attentive listener to this conversation which has been going on for more than an hour, but as yet has taken no part. Maybe it's because he's tired having carried his master who holds the halter thirty miles over the mountains. The saddle he bears is Home:made with an iron frame and wooden trimmings. It weighs alomost as much as he does. But in addition he can carry two hundred pounds of A.R.C. supplies, and often does. It's the only means the American relief organization has of transporting its supplies to isolated villages in the mountains. A convoy of fifty of these animals are used by the R.C. every week to take supplies from its station in Kavadar to the outlying districts. The picture was taken in the market at Kavadar

Serbian girls walk and knit. Peasant girls in Serbia improve each shining hour by knitting on their way to market. In this way not a moment is lost in their hard working lives. Most of the wool that they use is carded by them and made into stockings and various warm things for the cold winter. Serbian women are industerious sic and not only accomplish all the domestic tasks usually alloted to their sex but perform much of the hardest labor of the fields and farms. Thousands of young girls in this war ravaged country are idly drifting into womanhood because they are without fathers or mothers or homes. If the Junior Red Cross of America carries on with its plans of instituting industrial and vocational training school centers in different parts of Serbia it will mean that these helpless war victims will have within their reach means of becoming skilled in some useful occupation that will assure their future independence

In the early hours of the morning these Serbian peasant women walk over the rough roads for ten or fifteen miles on their way to the public markets of Belgrade where they sell their meager produce from small push carts. The markets open very early and close at noon to enable them to get back to their homes by the evening. The miserable existence that the peasant population of this war-torn country leads shows in the lined faces of the women, for in years they are much younger than they appear to be. After the Armistice when they were almost naked, it was the American Red Cross that rescued many thousands of them and helped them through some of the darkest hours that over beset their grief stricken country

Serbian head dress with American sweater. The cape head-dress of Serbian women is one of the characteristic features of their costumes that strike the eyes of the travelor sic It looks out of place with the American Red Cross sweater but the women of this section of Europe, who have known nothing but misery that war has brought them are not sticklers for the appropriateness of their dress. They wear anything in the way of their clothing that American relief workers have been able to give them. And are thoroughly grateful

Burried in food. This little burro is literally burried in food, these little animals are the favorite means of transportation in Serbia and they are usually loaded down with packs which almost conceal them from view. The load of food is not for its cartier however, as hay is far too expensive for donkeys. After the load is sold the animal will be turned loose to rustle his own food, because of the lack of other transportation facilities hundreds of tons of American Red Cross medicine and hospital supplies have been distributed to the inland hospitals of Serbia buy burro pack trains

Who said the War was over? That's what these Bulgarian prisoners behind barbed wire at the military internment camp at Kumanovo, Serbia would like to know. Due to their own economic condition and the fact that thousands of their own people are destitute and starving, the Serbs have been unable to give the best of treatment to prisoners of War. So when Capt. Claude E. Marble of Oneida, NY discovered their condition, he supplied them with American Red Cross clothing, food and medical attention. All were deloused and given a bath by the Red Cross, in order that the district may be kept free of typhus. These prisoners are being used in Serbia to rebuild homes, bridges and railroads that were destroyed by the Bulgarians during their occupation
