Weapons from waste. This is where they come in. These old shells rested for years, along with thousands of other discarded articles, in a junkyard, but now they'll be given another chance to serve their country. Junk today, they'll be melted down to provide the streamlined armament of tomorrow

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. This picture shows brass rod coming from the extrusion machine. Red hot brass billets (solid cylindrical castings) are pushed by tremendous force through a steel die in the extrusion press to form rods of various shapes, or hollow shells that are subsequently made into tubing. The metal is ejected from the extrusion press like tooth paste from a tube. Chase Brass and Copper Company, Euclid, Ohio

Tennessee Valley Authority production. Elemental phosphorus. A Negro worker tending an electric phosphate smelting furnace which is producing elemental phosphorus at a TVA chemical plant in the Muscle Shoals area. The phosphorus, used in the manufacture of incendiary bombs and shells and of material for "smoke," is produced by smelting phosphate rock, coke and silica together in the electric furnaces and condensing the resulting phosphorus gases. When surplus phosphorus is available it is converted into highly concentrated phosphate fertilizer, much of which is shipped abroad under provisions of the Lend-Lease Bill

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. In the brass and copper casting shop, the operator of an electric furnace is pouring the molten metal into molds to form shells, or rough tubes, which are later formed into finished tubes. Tubes are formed by casting molten metal into these molds in which a refractory core has been inserted. The molds are mounted on a turntable, which brings them into position to receive the pouring. Production. New Tennessee Valley Authority synthetic ammonia plant. Fitting a valve to serve one of the gas compressors in the TVA's new synthetic ammonia plant in the Muscle Shoals area. Ammonia is made here by the high-pressure synthesis of nitrogen and hydrogen. The ammonia thus secured is converted at Muscle Shoals to ammonium nitrate for use in the making of high explosive shells. In addition to the production of munitions, the TVA is engaged in research in many fields, seeking new sources of strategic materials and better ways to utilize them in the war effort
