U.S. Negro troops on way to Liberia. As a U.S. Army transport plows through the Atlantic on its way to Liberia, Africa, the Negro crew of a 37mm anti-aircraft gun holds a shipboard practice session. The soldiers, members of a U.S. Army Engineer's unit, were especially interested in Liberia, a Negro Republic founded by their ancestors whose governmental system is patterned on that of the U.S.

Lease lend loadings. Welding wheels of Douglas twin-engine light bombers to a platform on deck insures safe transit from an American port to the bombers' destination. Crews of highly specialized workers are required to load assembled planes on shipboard and to prevent their becoming dislodged in heavy seas. These precautions are unnecessary when planes are sent unassembled in crates; however, most planes going to the Near East are shipped ready for flight within one hour after docking, since in many ports competent unloading equipment is lacking or has been demolished by Axis raids

If you happen to be commander of a Navy ship you will be happy to know about this new piece of mechanism. It is the result of the combined efforts of various branches of the Navy Dept. It is a theodolite (compass for measuring the horizon) that will be used on Navy ships. Mr. R.L. Currie of the aerological office Bureau of Aeronautics, Navy department is shown with this instrument which will be used to site pilot balloons sent from shipboard for the sake of gathering weather information
