The latest in eye shields--for desert warfare. A shortage of non-inflammable celluloid has prompted the Union of South Africa government to utilize old photographic negatives to make eye shields needed for use in desert warfare. The original images in the shield can be seen by turning the picture upside down. The emulsion is washed off the negatives to make the shields transparent. More than a million such shields have been produced to protect United Nations soldier's eyes from wind, sand and dust. Margaret Bucci of Washington, D.C., demonstrated the shield

Warns U.S. of crop shortage, Washington, D.C. Aug. 12. The country will be faced with the worst crop shortage in years during 1936, according to Joseph A. Becker, chairman of the crop reporting board of the Department of Agriculture. Shortage of corn will be the worst since 1881 and potatoes will also be scarce. Becker's potato chart shows a decrease of the million bushels planted in 1936 compared to the production in 1925, which was also a lean year. This means you eaters who number spuds among your favorite dishes, will have to be content with 2.7 bushels per person this year

Hopkins denies AGC Charges. Washington, D.C. October 11. In a radio speech this morning WPA Administrator, Harry Hopkins, denied charges made by the Associated General Contractors of America that the WPA should be blamed for labor shortage. He said that "WPA projects in communities have been efficiently run and that the unemployed on these projects have been well treated, when the AGC complained that cities were unable to find workers because they were all employed in the WPA. When charged of boondoggling, Hopkins replied that it reminded him of the "Old Story of the bandits in South America," He said "they are never in the town which you are visiting, they are always just over the hill, and the townspeople will tell you they are there but when you look for them you never find them"
