Today, Morris used the same machine adapted to war subcontract work- -the cutting of large hexagonal nuts for a government arsenal. "Hexing a nut" is a very simple job with a machine designed to shape the entire piece in one operation, but such a machine is not available and time is short. Morris, therefore, shifts the round piece of steel stock three times, cutting two sides in each operation. Cube Steak Machine Company, Boston, Massachusetts

Hiwassee Dam and powerhouse. This plant is in a remote location and has relatively few visitors. The reception is correspondingly small. Its scheme of lighting may be noted. The round holes in the ceiling conceal "downlight" units which concentrate strong direct light on persons and objects from invisible sources. Background lighting is supplied from tubular units laid in coves along two sides of the room which throw light chiefly on the upper part of the walls and the light colored portion of the ceiling. Visible light fixtures are combined with air conditioning outlets and are decorative only. A large window along the left side of the room permits observation of the control room

Public Health Service Investigation Commission to the China-Burma highway, Chefang (vicinity), China. Small irrigation ditch in the rice fields formerly had anopheles minimus mosquitoes breeding in pockets all along it. It has been rechanneled, as indicated by the new mud piled up on both sides. But the cattle have already trampled it; vegetation is growing in the cattle tracks and minimus are starting to breed in it again. The ditch had to be dusted with Paris green

Rubber reclamation. Harvesting rubber from discarded tires. Scrap rubber, reclaimed by dissolving and washing out the fibrous materials in old casings, goes through the first refining process in a big Midwest plant. The cleaned, plasticized scrap passes through rolls which carry off dirt and foreign particles at the sides. The refined rubber is then gathered in sheets for further steps in the xylos process. Conversion. Beverage containers to aviation oxygen cylinders. The first step in the manufacture of high-altitude-flying shatterproof oxygen cylinders in the metal department of a large rubber factory is the forming or stamping of the shell. Stainless steel sheets are blanked or cut into discs(left foreground). Before stamping, these discs are drawn through rolls where a drawing compound is added to both sides to facilitate the forming of the shell. The 750-ton toggle press, shown above, forms a half cylinder in one powerful stroke. Once the half cylinder is formed, it is trimmed and the value-fitting hole is punched into the spherical dome. A cleaning operation later removes the drawing compound. The cylinder halves are now ready for the various welding operations. Firestone, Akron, Ohio
