Lady claims one seventh of property of U.S. Post office--posts her part. Washington, D.C., July 22. Mrs. Samuel A. Wimsatt who says that one seventh of the property upon which a postoffice was built at Rockville, MD., near here, is still hers because it was not legally bought from her. This morning she appeared at the scene upon which a dedication was scheduled and began posting 'No Trespassing' signs upon the part of the land which she claims. She threatened to have any trespassers locked up. Part of the ceremonies was to be a tour of inspection of the building, and when the time came, no arrests were made, although Mrs. Wimsatt began writing names upon the back of a 'No Trespassing' sign and threatens action Monday morning against visitors to the building. On the sidewalk behind her is her sister, Mrs. Claude Tschiffely who aided her in posting the signs, 7/22/39

Biography of a Liberty Ship. Birth of a ship. Less than five months from keel laying to launching ceremony was the record set by the Patrick Henry. This time is being reduced to 60 days in the construction of her sister ships of the "Liberty Ship" design. This standard design was selected by the Martime Commission to meet the need for ships that can be built in existing yards in minimum time with the additional purpose of conserving materials vitally needed for the war production effort. Prefabrication of sections in special plants, replacing of riveting wherever possible by welding and other new departures all contribute to the speed of construction and saving of material and dead weight in these ships which are already proving their worth in the war on the Axis

Going back to work. Youngest boy is Richard Millsap. The family record in bible says he is 11 years old - born Jan 22, 1903 (doubtful), and father says 12 years old. He appears to be under 9. Works every day at spinning, and has been working for some weeks. Boss saw investigator photographing him and whistled to him to get out. This photograph was gotten as he went in to work. Then boss took him off his regular job and put him helping others. Mother was furious at boss for not giving Richard and sister (a little older) more steady work. "He keeps changin em around and helpin others. I'll tell him that if he doesn't give em plenty of work there is plenty of mills that will." Father and mother both well and able to support family. Family of migrant agricultural day laborers camped near Spiro, Oklahoma. The man and his wife had farmed in this vicinity for many years. However, they had always been renters. They have found it increasingly difficult to find land and house for rent. They had moved to the river bottom where they were camping out while working in the nearby fields. The mosquitoes were bad. They had to move to higher ground by the roadside. The entire family--mother, father and six children--had malaria. When the man was asked if there was much malaria among the people, he replied, "Yes, they have always started chillin' and they'll keep achillin' till frost, them that don't die." The father and two children were chopping cotton for a dollar a day. The father said "that as soon as they got a few dollars ahead it came a rain and they spent their money before it was dry enough to work again." They had a car and were going on to California as soon as they had enough money. The woman's sister is living in Bakersfield, California, and they want to get out there.
