Crowded refugee traini proceeding with returning Polish refugees from military centers on the Eastern front to refugee stations where they will be deloused and disinfected before being allowed to penetrate into the interior. It was estimated that between a million and a quarter and a million and a half of these refugee would return to Poland between June and the coming winter. Interallied Medical Comm, sent by the League of Red Cross Societies to investigate the Typhus situation in Poland found that 2% of these refugees are infected with typhus. The official report of the Comm. states that the present epidemic of typhus in Poland is widespread, with fresh cases being constantly introduced in the East by returning refugees and prisoners of war, and that unless the most active measures are taken to deal effectively with the situation there will be very serious epidemic this winter, which will be a menace not only to Poland but to Western Europe and America. The Polish authorities are doing their best to deal with the situation, but they are seriously handicapped by the lack of soap, disinfectants, drugs, sheets, blankets, clothing, food, hospital equipment and trained personnel
