Production. Tin smelting. Emptying bags of raw tin ore from South America on a conveyor which feeds the crusher of a Southern smelter. The crusher reduces the larger particles to uniform size and discharges ore ready for the first stages of the smelting operation. The plant is already producing large quantities of tin for the countless war needs of the United Nations. Additional processing units now being added assure a much heavier output in the near future

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Drawing seamless copper tube. Rough cast tubes tapered at one end to fit through a die are gripped in the tongs of the electric motor-driven vehicle on the drawbench and pulled or "drawn" through the die to reduce them to the desired size. Tubes usually are redrawn many times; each successive "draw" reduces the diameter, and increases the length. Brass tubes need to be annealed or softened between each draw, but copper tubes can be drawn several times without intermediate annealing. The tapered nose of the tubes may be seen just behind the drawbench operator. The tube is checked with a micrometer after being drawn, to make sure it is the right diameter. The man looking through the short section of tube is inspecting the inner surface for flaws. The Chase Copper and Brass Company, Euclid, Ohio

Putting tire into curing mold. From the vacuum expander, the potential new truck tire is taken to this "watch-case" curing mold in which it is baked under high heat and pressure for a long time. The exact time and temperature varies with the type and size of tire. The airbag inside the carcass is filled with live steam during this process so that heat is added from both inside and out. The mold contains the tread pattern, or design, as well as all markings which will appear on sidewall. Under this heat and pressure the rubber turns semi-liquid, and flows into every crevice, completely bonding the rubber processed fabric carcass to the cushion, the cushion to the tread. After this operation it is now one unit--a complete tire. Firestone (General) Tires, Akron, Ohio
