Testimony of Chicago cop climaxes stormy session of Civil Liberties Committee. Washington D.C. July 1. Testimony of Sergt. Lawrence Lyons, Chicago police officer in charge of one of the details participating in the Memorial Day riot in which 10 marching steel strikers were killed, climaxed a stormy hearing before the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today. He assumed a beligerent attitude in his denial that the police were "murderers". His testimony was frequently punctuated by the hisses of the spectators at the hearing and when he clashed with Chairman Lafollette. 7/1/37

Chicago Police Commissioner defends men. Washington, D.C., June 30. Not-with-standing a coroner's report that seven of the fatalities resulted from bullet wounds in the back, James P. Allman, Chicago police commissioner, told the Senate Civil Liberties Committee today that his police officers were justified in the tactics which resulted in the death of 10 marching steel strikers in front of the South Chicago plant of the Republic Steel Corp., last May 30. His men were attacked while attempting to preserve the peace, Allman insisted, and only by the tactics used was a massacre prevented if the marching strikers had succeeded in entering the plant where men were at work, 6/30/37
