Depth of 500 feet reached by Navy Divers in recent test of Helium-Oxygen for air supply. Washington, D.C., Aug., 8/9/38. Record dives--deep as 500 feet--have been recently made at the Navy Yard here and off the USS Falcon Submarine rescue vessel operating from Portsmouth, N.H. by divers using Navy standard diving suits and with a mixture of helium-oxygen for air supply. A depth of 500 feet was reached under simulated sea conditions in the diving tank at the Navy Yard here. Heretofore 306 feet was the greatest depth reached by divers wearing standard rubber diving suits. (1) H.H. Television inventor tells Economic Committee of difficulties in getting patents. Washington, D.C., Jan. 19. Philo T. Farnsworth, who conceived the principle of television when 14 years old came before the Temporary National Economic Committee today and told them that his firm, Farnsworth Television, Inc., has taken out 46 patents, has twice as many pending, and that more than 20 patent suits have resulted in which his firm was cleared in each case. Attorney General Frank Murphy today put in one of his rare appearances upon the Hill to endorse a bill proposed by Senator Robert M. LaFollette, Jr. to outlaw oppressive labor practices. He proposed, however, two amendments to the bill to clearly state that company guards with criminal records be declared illegal, and that suits to restrain oppressive labor practices be filed through the Justice Department rather than the Labor Department.
