Denver, Colorado. Workers giving ship steel a thorough rinsing after it has been "pickled" in the highest steel "pickling" vat in the world. The "pickling" operation, giving steel a sulphuric bath to remove mill scale, is a common sight at Seaboard Shipyards, and is something unique at the mile-high Denver fabricating plant and an illustration of American industrial ingenuity

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Pickling lengths of copper water tube in a brass and copper mill. After annealing, or softening by heat to reduce brittleness and allow further drawing, tubes are "pickled" in a sulphuric acid solution to remove oxide and scale that result from the anneal. Bundles of the tubes are picked up by electric cranes and transported from the pickle to a rinse bath of water. The tubes are then returned to the drawbench for re-drawing down to smaller diameters. Six stages of fat salvage. Shipped in metal drums, the glycerine is no longer recognizable as waste fat. Its nitric and sulphuric acids are added, it becomes deadly nitroglycerine for explosives. When gylcerine is allocated to one of our allies, it is usually shipped in its harmless state
