Socks of a Macedonian school boy. Not for golf courses but for every day school wear does the peasant mother in old Macedonia design these elaborate stockings for their sons and daughters and knit them with astonishing quickness. Like most of the other clothing worn in this part of the world they are of pure soft wool and usually match in color and design the scarf and jacket of the wearer. Before the war the playgrounds and school rooms looked like living tapestries with all the children 'done up' in wool from head to foot representing the clever artistry of some hard worked mother who has burned the mid-night oil and knitted at every odd moment in order to keep her children and husband as well as herself, properly in the mode that has existed there for centuries
