Biggest and costliest yet. This is the radio room on the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Chelan, the newest cutter of the service now anchored at the Navy Yard, Washington D.C. This radio room houses three transmitters and three receiving sets. On the maiden trip she picked up an SOS and towed a schooner 1,500 miles, a record tow. The cutter cost approximately $1,000,000. First skiing town in U.S. built on this farm in 1934 by White Cupboard Inn, but Gilbert now owns and runs tow and it has increased his income about 25 percent. "Here's where your parachute came from," Deena Clark, civilian defense volunteer tells Technical Sergeant Leo Matkins of the Army Air Corps. The worn out nylon stockings in this barrel full of salvaged stockings will be reprocessed and made into parachutes for army fliers, tow ropes for glider planes and other war material. The worn out silk stockings return to service as powder bags for the Army's big guns. The collection is typical of the thousands of salvage stations in retail stores throughout the country, which have collected 626,127 pounds of old silk and nylon stockings in three months. The campaign is directed by local salvage committees

Map depicts significant story on pickup in American industry. Washington, D.C. March 30. Tow lines on this chart hanging in the office of Isador Lubin, Commissioner of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, tell a significant story of the pickup in American Industry since 1933. Mr. Lubin points to line no. 1 which represents the consumers or nondurable goods industries (food, clothing, etc.) it began to climb in 1933 and has been on the upgrade ever since. Line no. 2 represents durable goods or heavy industry (steel building materials, machinery). It was hardest hit by the depression, lagged far behind even during most of 1936. But line no. 2 is going almost straight up. By March 1, it has attained a level almost parallel with consumers goods. This means that for the first time since 1929, payrolls in vital heavy industries are once again in a normal relation to payrolls in the consumer industries.
