Final check, weather device. Washington, D.C., Sept. 13. L.L. Stockman, also of the Bureau of Standards, Radium Division, uses a wave meter to check the radiometeorograph before attaching it to the parachute and the balloon. When the inflated bag breaks, which it usually does after several hours flying, the instrument is parachuted to the ground. Many times the instrument is found and returned to the bureau. The radiometeorograph contains two radio tubes, a miniature dry cell battery and devices which record and send the weather signals which, in turn, are recorded on a chronograph in Dr. Astin's bood [?] radio room.

Citations of Individual Production Merit awarded. The first five citations of Individual Production Merit have been awarded to five war workers, War Production Drive Headquarters has announced. The citation is the highest award conferred for individual achievement. It is granted only for ideas or suggestions that have an outstanding effect on the war effort. Walter P. Hill of Detroit, Michigan, a sales and development manager for the Wolverine Tube Division of the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Co., developed an idea of prime military importance. All that can be said is that he developed the "overall spum and primer for an ammunition primer which is now being utilized for large manufacturers of primer tubes. This effects a saving of metal, increased production with present facilities and lower overall production costs." The rest has been restricted by military authorities

Conversion. Copper and brass processing. Drawing seamless copper tube. Rough cast tubes tapered at one end to fit through a die are gripped in the tongs of the electric motor-driven vehicle on the drawbench and pulled or "drawn" through the die to be reduced to the desired size. Tubes usually are redrawn many times; each successive "draw" reduces the diameter, and increases the length. Brass tubes need to be annealed or softened between each draw, but copper tubes can be drawn several times without intermediate annealing. The tapered nose of the tubes may be seen just behind the drawbench operator. Chase Copper and Brass Company, Euclid, Ohio

Transformer manufacture. When completed, this transformer will supply electric furnaces with the power needed to produce steel for Uncle Sam's ships and tanks and guns. The cooling coils pictured here are made of copper. A new process of forced oil cooling adds efficiency to these coilings; oil through these tubes at relatively high speed, cooling is greatly improved, and a larger lead current can be carried through the copper windings, thereby increasing the output of the transformer. Transformer manufacture. These porcelain spirals are part of the works of a power transformer; transformers are essential to war production industries, and this employee of a large Eastern electrical company, working in the bushing section, is contributing essentially to Uncle Sam's war effort. Bushings are the tubes which hold the copper leads through which power flows both in and out of giant transformers. Westinghouse, Sharon, Pennsylvania
