Where Modesty is Compulsory. Turkish influence can be seen on every hand through out the Balkans. Perhaps the most visible evidence is the dress of the women. This shows a group of Mohammedan wives with gowns and veils prescribed by their religion. The veil must never be removed in public. These women were photographed on their way from their mountain homes into Salonica to obtain relief supplies from the American Red Cross. Mohammedan and Christian war sufferers shared alike in the distribution of Red Cross food, clothing and medicines throughout the Near East
