Victorious purgees shelve administration's neutrality legislation for term. Washington, D.C., July 11. By a vote of 11-12, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee today shelved the consideration of neutrality legislation until next term of Congress. By defeating the Pittman Resolution, they dashed the administration's hopes for repealing the arms embargo. Gillette vigorously denied that he voted as he did simply to take revenge for the president's attempt to defeat him at the last election. Both Senator Walter George, left, and Guy Gillette, right, have been in the center of a question mark since it became known that the committee would vote on neutrality legislation today. Both were intended victims of the 1938 [...], and today held controlling votes in the meeting

To the right is a spot of sinister significance in Poltava-the wood of Belawitch-in which in lone, shallow trenches the Council, or political Court of the Bolshevists, interred its victims after they had been tortured and executed. To the left is a one-story brick structure formerly occupied by the "Militisia" as the police of the Red Government are named. The groups of country people have tramped in from their villages in the hope of indentifying the remains, which are taken from the pit. The Bolshevists observed secrecy in their burials and it will be only a small fraction of the number of their victims can ever be discovered

Algiers convent where fifteen nuns were killed by Nazi bombs. When German dive bombers raided the North African port of Algiers on April 17, fifteen Catholic sisters perished at their prayers as the bombs demolished this convent-orphanage. The fifteen who died and three sisters who were severely wounded remained behind to pray when the raid started while other nuns led sixty orphans from the building to the safety of an air raid shelter. Among the victims was Mother Superior Marie Duval, who had been at the convent for thirty-one years. General Henri Honore Giraud, civil and military commander-in-chief of French North and West Africa, awarded Mother Duval the French Legion of Honor posthumously, stating: "On April 17, 1943, she was a victim of German barbarism, as were fourteen of her sisters." This picture was radiophotoed from North Africa to the United States
