"Gridiron Widows" satirize U.S. Supreme Court. Washington, D.C., Dec. 17. While their husbands attended the annual winter dinner of the Gridiron Club tonight, the wives, all members of the Women's National Press Club and appropriately called 'Gridiron Widows' by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, were guests of the First Lady at the White House. Mrs. Roosevelt's appointment to the vacancy was a feature of the party. Left to right: Elizabeth May Craig as Justice Roberts; Helen Atwater as Justice Butler; Ruby Black as Justice McReynolds; Isabel Griffin as Justice Brandeis; Lilli L. Sheppard as Justice Hughes; Bess Furman as Justice Stone; Catherine Redman as Justice Black; Alena Wharton as Justice Reed; and Dorothy Lewis as Mrs. Roosevelt. In the front is Betty Garnett as the court page, 12/16/38

Wives of Gridiron Club members to entertain Mrs. Roosevelt while men entertain President. Washington, D.C., Dec. 10. Each year, President Roosevelt rides to the 13th floor of the National Press Building to see himself and other leading lights in official Washington lampooned unmercifully. Wives of members of the Gridiron Club which sponsors the affair, got together and within the last few years have held a party of similar nature at the White House for Mrs. Roosevelt, with members of the Gridiron Widows putting on a skit to poke fun at wives of leading figures on a 'Rancho 40' skit, with Mrs. Raymond Clapper, wife of Columnist Clapper, cracking the whip as Ringmaster. 1- A couple of dark horses - and Mrs. Farley by proxy. 'Uncle Jim' Farley, holding aloft the message that 'Mrs. Farley scratched,' stands like a [...] colossus over the two dark horses, John L. Lewis and Clark Gable. Mrs. Farley's proxy is Mrs. Ray Henle, Lewis is Mrs. Jim Berryman, and Gable is Mrs. W.F. Raymond

"Gridiron Women" hold frolic while men fete President at Press Club. Washington, D.C., Dec. 16. While the Gridiron Club of Washington is holding its annual dinner for the Presdient at the National Press Club, women officials, newspaper women, and wives of members and guests of the Gridiron Club, dubbed "gridiron Widows" by Mrs. Roosevelt, will gather at the White House for their own party. five "impossible moments" in the highest official and social circles of Washington will be presented in gag form. More, one of those moments is built around the forthcoming visit of the British king and queen, and is the "Cummings Courtesy Class" in which Mrs. Homer S. Cummings, the one Cabinet lady who has been presented at the Court of St. James', drills her fellow cabinet ladies in their prospective duties. The ladies are exhausted after one of the sessions.
