Manpower. Former actress now aircraft worker. From central casting to aircraft casting! Erstwhile child star of the silent picture days, auburn-haired Dorothy Langdon now inspects airplane engine parts in a Detroit war plant. Known as "Baby Dorothy Phelps" of the silents, and heart interest of western thrillers in the middle thirties, Miss Langdon joined America's army of women war workers early this year. With a husband in the Army, the twenty-six-year-old beauty finds her new role in life eminently satisfying. "I'm really doing something," she says. "I got tired of just playing at doing something." In addition to her forty-eight hour work week at the inspection table, Miss Langdon still finds time to study drafting at night

Women in war. Machine gun production operators. This modern "spinning wheel" would astound our grandmothers, and so would the young woman who operates it. One of America's thousands of skilled women war workers, this young Midwesterner twirls the wheel that controls the drilling of holes in machine gun parts. A skilled machine operator, she formerly processed spark plugs on a similar machine, but turned her efforts to war work when the factory was converted to the manufacture of machine guns. A.C. Safe clothes for women war workers. Inappropriately dressed for a war plant job, Eunice Kimball is interviewed by Earl Metz, Bendix Aviation employment manager. Mr. Metz tells her that though her application may show her fitness for the job, her clothes are completely unfit for it. Those open-toed sandals would be no protection against falling tools or other heavy objects; her fuzzy sweater would catch in machines; and her jewelry would be a constant menace against moving machine parts. "You're hired," he tells Eunice, "but we'll have to put you into a safe uniform before you even enter the shop." Bendix Aviation Plant, Brooklyn, New York

Safe clothes for women war workers. A closeup of Eunice's new uniform reveals one of its most important safety factors: the tight-buttoning trouser ankles which prelude the possibility of a loose trouser's catching in moving machinery. Note also the sturdily built, comfortable safety shoes, with box toe which helps protect the wearer from falling objects. Bendix Aviation Plant, Brooklyn, New York
