The House Ways and Means Sub-Committee learned today that taxpayers in the income bracket from $5,000 to $25,000 a year make most of the Capital gains and pay most of the tax, treasury experts who gave the information also presented a table showing that the Capital gains tax yielded $516,000,000 in 1929 and brought in approximately $85,000,000 last year, photographed at the hearing today were left to right: Cong. Lost them through foreclosure when cotton prices fell after the war. Became tenants and sharecroppers. With the drought and dust they came West, 1934-1937. Never before left the county where they were born. Now although in California over a year they haven't been continuously resident in any single county long enough to become a legal resident. Panay hero receives Navy Cross. Washington, D.C., July 1. Fireman first class John L. Hodge, who is recuperating at Naval Hospital here, was today decorated with the Navy Cross for the bravery he displayed during the sinking of the U.S. gunboat Panay by Japanese bombs last year. Assistant Secretary of the Navy Charles Edison is pictured pinning the award on the Bluejacket. Twelve year old Selina Wall working at spooling in the Brazos [?] Valley Cotton Mill, West Texas. Their family Record says she was born, March 23, 1901. Her mother said: "She's just taking the place of her sister fifteen years old. Selina could earn a dollar a day. She was raised up in a cotton mill over in Belton, but she has to stay home and do the cookin." The mother and the fifteen year old girl work regularly in the mill. Several older boys work. Selina keeps house. Nine in the family.  Location: West, Texas.

All these boys are cutters in the Seacoast Canning Co., Factory #7. Ages range from 7 to 12. They live near the factory. Seven year old boy in front, Byron Hamilton, has a badly cut finger, but helps his brother regularly. Behind him is his brother, George, 11 years. He cut his finger half off while working. They and many other youngsters said they were always cutting their fingers. (See photo #2435 and label.) George earns $1.00 some days, $.75 usually. Some of the others said they earn $1.00 when they work all day. At times they start at 7 A.M. Work all day, and until midnight, but the work is very irregular. Names of those in the photo are George Mathews, Johnny Rust, John Surles, Fulsom McCutchin (11 yrs.), Albert Robinson, Morris McConnell.  Location: Eastport, Maine.
