Im Jahr 2015 erhielt die Dokumentarfotografin Carol Highsmith einen Brief von Getty Images, in dem ihr Urheberrechtsverletzungen vorgeworfen wurden, weil sie eines ihrer eigenen Fotos auf ihrer eigenen Website zeigte. Sie forderte die Zahlung von 120 Dollar. So erfuhr Highsmith, dass die Stock-Foto-Agenturen Getty und Alamy ähnliche Drohbriefe verschickt und Gebühren von den Nutzern ihrer Bilder verlangt hatten, die sie der Library of Congress zur kostenlosen Nutzung durch die breite Öffentlichkeit gespendet hatte. Im Jahr 2016 hat Highsmith eine Urheberrechtsverletzungsklage in Höhe von einer Milliarde Dollar gegen Alamy und Getty eingereicht, in der sie den "groben Missbrauch" von 18.755 ihrer Fotos angibt. "Die Angeklagten [Getty Images] haben anscheinend das großzügige Geschenk von Frau Highsmith an das amerikanische Volk veruntreut", heißt es in der Klage. "[Sie] erheben nicht nur unrechtmäßig Lizenzgebühren... sondern stellen sich fälschlicherweise und betrügerisch als exklusiver Urheber heraus". Gemäß der Klage haben Getty und Alamy auf ihren Webseiten Lizenzen für tausende von Highsmiths Fotos verkauft, viele ohne ihren Namen und mit "falschen Wasserzeichen" versehen.
