Das Haus wurde von Henry Toombs von McKim, Mead & White unter der strengen Aufsicht Franklin D. Roosevelts entworfen. Auf Drängen von FDR ist das Häuschen eine Kopie des frühen holländischen Kolonialstils, der im Hudson Valley gefunden wurde, und wurde mit lokalem Feldstein gebaut, der von Steinmauern auf dem umliegenden Grundstück genommen wurde.
