Summary

Significance: It was built between 1765-1773 as part of the landward defensive ensemble of San Juan. Its design evolved into a non-classical configuration in order to strengthen the existing adjacent 17th century wall. The north rampart of San Carlos was oriented so as to flank a hill which permitted a covered approach to the walls of the city. The south rampart transformed an existing ridge into a fortified position dominating the approaches to the city gate. San Carlos, along with the other new ramparts, submitted any attacker to flank and enfilade fire along the approaches he could take...
